Active Schools Week 2018 Newsletter

Active Schools Week takes place from the 23rd to the 27th of April. There are lots of different activities and events going on in the school all week to encourage all the children to be active.

Children are asked to wear their school tracksuit all week.

The children will be given activity homework. They will be given a card to fill in about the activity that they are involved in at home and in school during Active Schools Week.

There will be break time activities organised for all pupils.

The children in 3rd and 4th class will participate in Lunch Time Leagues and the matches will be refereed by 6th class.

We will have people visiting throughout the week to provide taster sessions of different activities to the classes.

  • Irish Rugby
  • Eric Banville
  • Irish Water Safety
  • Karen Holmes
  • Kevin Cogley
  • Wexford GAA

We are focusing on the strand of Outdoor and Adventure Activities for our Active Flag this year and we will have a day dedicated to that strand.

There will be a Walk a Mile with a Smile on Friday morning and the children are all asked to wear a jersey.

Wallaces Supervalu, Wellington Bridge have kindly sponsored fruit for the children to taste as part of Active Schools Week.

I hope all the children have a fun filled and active week.

Thanks to the committee who have been working hard to get everything ready.

Please have a look at our school website for photos throughout the week.

Kind Regards

Move it  Monday

Active Schools got off to a great start this morning with an Active Assembly. Miss Meyler ran through the Active Timetable for the day. We finished it off with a Wake Up and Shake Up with the Cha Cha Slide.

Every class got a chance through out the day to visit the hall throughout the day to take part in the Move it Monday Circuit.

Here are some action shots of the children taking part.

The Active Schools Committee organised challenges for break-time. Today they organised a Keepie Uppy Challenge.

Try it Tuesday

We started our day with a Wake Up and Shake Up. The two songs were Chicken Dance and Superman.

We had a skipathon in each class. The kids put their skipping skills to the test. The Active Schools Committee organised a hoola hoop competition.

Workout Wednesday

There were loads of visitors to the school today. Kevin Cogley, Athletics Coach, visited this school this morning to facilitate a running/moving workshop. The kids had lots of fun outside.

The 3rd to 6th Class also had a visit from Karen Holmes – KHWORX. She came in to do a taster session in Boxercise. Plenty of red faces afterwards.

Trail Thursday

As part of our Active Flag we chose the strand Outdoor and Adventure to focus on for further development.  Every class got an opportunity throughout the day to learn about control cards and maps.

Shane O Hanlon visited from Wexford GAA to show the children Run n Fun as part of the 5 Star GAA Programme. The children were constantly active and had lots of fun.

The Teachers took on the 6th Class and 5th Class in Dodge ball. The other classes got to watch.

Feel Good Friday

We started the day with an extra long Wake Up and Shake Up as it was raining. We danced to Saturday Night, The Cha Cha Slide and The Chicken Dance.

A special delivery of fruit arrived to the school this morning from Wallaces Supervalu which was kindly sponsored. The kids enjoyed tasting the variety of fruits and even got to bring some home.

We had a visit from Eric Banville who did a workshop on the Fundamental Movement Skills.

Limbo took place at lunch time as part of our Lunch Time Challenge.
